RESUMO

PURPOSE: To describe a novel technique of nasolacrimal foreign body extraction in dogs by using a 20G vitreoretinal forceps introduced through the superior lacrimal punctum. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records of dogs with dacryocystitis due to nasolacrimal foreign bodies between the years 2001 and 2022 was performed. We recorded the breed, age, affected eye, type and number of foreign bodies, concomitant diseases, and the use of imaging techniques. All animals underwent the same procedure of a 20G vitreoretinal forceps insertion through the upper canaliculus reaching the lacrimal sac and retrograde extraction of the foreign bodies. RESULTS: A total of 28 dogs were included, 16 males and 12 females, with a mean (±SD) age of 4.7 (±3.2) years. The most common breeds were Wire-Haired Dachshund (4/28; 14.29%) and Labrador Retriever (3/28; 10.71%). Additional imaging techniques were used, such as orbital ultrasound in 13 cases (13/28; 46.43%) and computed tomography in one case (1/28; 3.57%). The most common type of foreign body retrieved was grass awns, although seeds and plant debris were also found. Dacryocystitis resolved after removal of the foreign body and appropriate medical therapy was ensured in all cases in the 1-month postprocedure follow-up. CONCLUSION: Extraction of nasolacrimal foreign bodies with vitreoretinal forceps is a novel, noninvasive, and easily applicable technique that, although not successful in all cases, can be attempted before performing more aggressive surgery.

RESUMO

A total of 150 21-day-old weaned piglets [(Yorkshire × Landrace) × Duroc] were randomly assigned to 3 groups (CON, TRT1, TRT2) to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of probiotic, paraprobiotic, and hydrolyzed yeast mixture (PPY) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, fecal bacterial counts, fecal calprotectin contents, and diarrhea rate in a 42-day experiment (phase 1: days 1-14; phase 2: days 15-42). There were 10 replicate pens per treatment with 5 pigs per pen (three gilts and two barrows). Pigs in CON were only provided with a basal diet. Pigs in TRT1 were provided with a basal diet + 3000 mg/kg zinc oxide during phase 1 and a basal diet during phase 2. Pigs in TRT2 were provided with a basal diet + 200 mg/kg probiotic (Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii) + 800 mg/kg paraprobiotic (inactivated yeast strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Cyberlindnera jadinii) + 10 g/kg hydrolyzed yeast mixture during phase 1, and a basal diet + 100 mg/kg probiotic + 400 mg/kg paraprobiotic mixture during phase 2. Pigs in TRT1 and TRT2 were significantly heavier at day 14 and 42 than CON pigs. Growth rate during days 1-14, 15-42, and 1-42 and feed efficiency during days 1-14 were similarly affected by treatment while feed efficiency was significantly higher for TRT2 pigs between 15-42 and 1-42 days. Moreover, nitrogen and energy digestibility in both TRT1 and TRT2 were higher than that in CON. During experimental periods, diarrhea rate in TRT1 and TRT2 was lower than that in CON. Therefore, we demonstrated that PPY supplementation had comparable effects as ZnO in improving growth performance and nutrient digestibility as well as ameliorating post-weaning diarrhea in weaned piglets.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to assess the effect that feeding Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 (LSB) to lactating sows and their progeny has on inflammatory response and mucosal immunity after vaccination against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Sixty-seven Danbred sows were allotted into two treatments when they entered the farrowing room seven days before the expected farrowing date: control (CON: lactation diet) and LSB (CON + 12 × 109 colony forming units (CFU)/d until weaning). At weaning, piglets were equally allotted into two experimental diets according to sow diet: control (CON: 2-phase post-weaning diets) and LSB (CON + 2 × 109 CFU/kg and 1 × 109 CFU/kg in phases 1 and 2, respectively). The piglets were vaccinated at days 26 and 49 post-weaning. Growth performance and number of IgA producing cells and cytokine's gene expression in lung, lymph node, and intestine samples at day 70 post-weaning were assessed and analyzed in SPSS Statistics 26: performance with a general linear model with sex, room, sow diet, piglet diet, and their interactions as main effects, and immunity with a Kruskal−Wallis test for k unrelated samples. Piglets from LSB-fed sows displayed a higher average daily gain (ADG; p < 0.01) and a heavier body weight (BW; p < 0.05) during lactation, tended (p < 0.1) to be heavier at day 49, and to have a higher ADG between days 26 and 49; had fewer number of IgA producing cells in the lymph node (p < 0.05); and all the cytokines studied were significantly under-regulated (p < 0.05) in the lung. It is concluded that feeding Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 to sows improved piglet performance during lactation and showed a clear reduction in the inflammatory status of the lungs after vaccination against A. pleuropneumoniae, suggesting that there was a maternal imprinting effect on mucosal protection and a cross-talk between the gut microbiota and the lung.

RESUMO

We studied the effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 (LSB) supplemented to lactating sows on reproductive traits and farrowing duration and to piglets from day 7 of life on post-weaning performance and IgG concentration. Ninety-six Landrace × Yorkshire sows started the trial 5 days before the expected farrowing date. Sows were distributed into 2 groups according to parity number and backfat thickness: control (CON: regular lactation diet) and LSB (CON + LSB at 2 × 109 colony forming units [CFU]/kg of feed). Seven days after birth, litters were randomly selected from each group and supplemented creep feed with or without LSB at 2 × 109 CFU/kg. At weaning, piglets from CON sows were shifted to a commercial farm and allocated to 14 pens in groups of 25 piglets/pen according to the creep feed supplemented during lactation. Piglets followed a 3-phase feeding program: creep, pre-starter and starter, with or without LSB at 2 × 109 CFU/kg LSB in creep and pre-starter, and 1 × 109 CFU/kg LSB in starter. The piglets were vaccinated against classical swine fever on days 41 and 72 of life. One day before each vaccination and at the end of the trial, blood samples were collected from 15 randomly selected piglets per treatment and assessed for total IgG. Supplemented sows with non-supplemented litters displayed the lowest backfat thickness loss during lactation (p < 0.05). The LSB supplementation shortened farrowing duration (p < 0.05) and increased feed intake (p < 0.05) during the first week of lactation. The LSB-fed piglets were heavier at the end of creep (p < 0.05), pre-starter (p < 0.05), and the trial (p < 0.05); grew faster during creep (p < 0.05), starter (p < 0.05), and overall (p < 0.05); and displayed an improved feed conversion ratio during creep (p < 0.05). Total IgG content was higher at days 40 (p < 0.05) and 71 (p < 0.05) in LSB-fed piglets. We conclude that supplementing sows with Saccharomyces cerevisiae boulardii CNCM I-1079 from late gestation until weaning shortens farrowing duration, increases feed intake, and minimizes backfat losses during lactation. When supplemented to piglet diet, post-weaning performance is improved. This improvement observed could be linked to a better immune status, as suggested by the higher IgG.

Introduction and objectives: Haptoglobin is a protein involved in the protection against oxidative damage caused by iron in haemoglobin. This protein is polymorphic, with 3 isomorphs prevalent in the population. The carriers of the Hp2-2 isoform have a lower antioxidant capacity and, in the population with diabetes, an increased risk of subclinical vascular disease and cardiovascular complications. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether this isomorphy is associated with an increased risk of carotid arteriosclerosis in subjects with and without diabetes, and free of cardiovascular disease. Patients and methods: A study was conducted in a population between 45 and 74years of age, randomly selected from the northwest area of Madrid. The participants were characterised in terms of their glycaemic status by oral glucose overload and the determination of the concentration of Hb1Ac. The haptoglobin phenotypes in all of them were determined by means of an immunoenzymatic assay, and the presence of carotid arteriosclerosis by ultrasound. Results: Of the 1,256 participants included in the present analysis (mean age 61.6 ± 6 years, 41.8% males), the distribution of the isoforms of haptoglobin was as follows: Hp1-1: 13.3%, Hp1-2: 48.5%, and Hp2-2: 38.2%. In comparison with subjects Hp1-1 and Hp1-2, those with the Hp2-2 phenotype had a higher prevalence of dyslipidaemia (53.3% vs 43%; P < .0001) and arterial hypertension (39.2% vs. 32.2%, P = .012), and they more frequently received treatment with statins (31.5% vs 21.6%, P < .0001), and with antihypertensive agents (38.4% vs 30.8%, P = .006). The carriers of the Hp2-2 isoform had a higher prevalence of carotid plaques (OR: 1.35, 95%CI: 1.07-1.69, P = .011), with no differences in that prevalence as regards the glycaemic status. There were no differences in the intima-media thickness between the different phenotypes. The relationship of the Hp2-2 phenotype with the presence of plaques in the carotid was independent of age, gender, presence of risk factors (dyslipidaemia, hypertension and diabetes), the concentration of LDL-cholesterol, C-reactive protein and uric acid, blood pressure, and treatment with statins, and hypertensive drugs (OR: 1.31, 95% CI 1.01-1.70, P = .044). Conclusion: Subjects with the Hp2-2 phenotype of haptoglobin have a higher prevalence of carotid arteriosclerosis, which is independent of the presence of other cardiovascular risk factors and their glycaemic status

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate the use of corneoconjunctival transposition (CTT) as a surgical treatment for canine deep stromal ulcers, descemetoceles, and full-thickness corneal defects and to determine its efficacy in preserving corneal graft transparency and vision. ANIMALS STUDIED: One hundred client-owned dogs with deep stromal ulcers, descemetoceles, or full-thickness corneal defects. METHODS: Medical records of canine patients that underwent CCT, from 2012 to 2018, were reviewed. Only, patients with preoperative positive consensual pupillary light and dazzle reflexes were included. RESULTS: There were 59 males and 41 females, from 0.3 to 17 years. Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented (65%). All patients were unilaterally affected, with 16 deep stromal ulcers, 33 descemetoceles, and 51 corneal perforations, of a median (range) size of 4 (2-8) mm. The central cornea was affected in the majority of cases (57%), and euryblepharon and keratoconjunctivitis sicca were the most common concurrent ocular diseases (42% and 40%, respectively). The graft was most frequently harvested from dorsal (67%), and 9/0 absorbable suture material was used. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were seen in 7 and 21 cases, respectively. Mean follow-up time was 107.8 days. Vision was preserved in 96% patients, with 62% showing faint to mild opacification. Among the statistically analyzed variables, euryblepharon and pigmentary keratitis were found to be significantly associated with greater corneal graft opacification (P = .040 and P = .028, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Corneoconjunctival transposition is an effective surgical treatment for deep stromal, descemetocele, and full-thickness corneal defects in dogs, achieving a highly satisfactory degree of corneal graft transparency and preserving vision.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the health benefits to weaning pigs, raised under low sanitary conditions, of dietary supplementation with a multi-strain yeast fraction product (Cyberlindnera jadinii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae). In total, 160 weaning pigs (7.21 ± 1.05 kg) were randomly allotted to two dietary treatments in a 6-week feeding trial. The dietary treatments included a corn-soybean meal-based basal diet (CON) and CON + 2 g kg-1 multi-strain yeast fraction product (MsYF) during weeks 1-2 and 0.4 g kg-1 MsYF during weeks 3-6. RESULTS: The MsYF supplementation increased (P < 0.05) body weight (BW) at day 42 and average daily gain (ADG) during days 1-14 and days 1-42 (P < 0.05) compared to CON. The total tract digestibility of dry matter (DM), fecal Lactobacillus counts, and serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration at day 42 were higher (P < 0.05) in pigs fed a MsYF supplemented diet. The concentration of serum haptoglobin in pigs receiving a MsYF-supplemented diet was higher (P < 0.05) at days 7, 14, and 42 than those receiving CON. The mRNA expression for INF-γ and TNF-α genes were lower (P < 0.05) at days 14 and 7 respectively and the expression of IL-6 and TLR-2 genes was lower (P < 0.01) at days 7 and 14 in pigs fed an MsFY supplemented diet than those fed CON. CONCLUSION: Supplementation with a multi-strain yeast fraction product had a positive effect on ADG during the early post-weaning period and led to better health in weaning pigs. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The R46L variant of the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) gene has been related to lipid levels and cardiovascular disease. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of this polymorphism on subclinical vascular disease and erectile dysfunction (ED). METHODS: We analyzed the association of the PCSK9 rs11591147 single-nucleotide polymorphism with lipid levels, intima-media thickness (IMT), and the ankle-brachial index, in 1188 adults free of cardiovascular disease, randomly selected from the population. In 473 male participants, we also investigated its relationship with ED. The association of the R46L polymorphism with lipid levels was also assessed in 2 cohorts of 1103 prepuberal children and 830 adolescents. RESULTS: The prevalence of the T allele was 2.9% in adults. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) levels did not vary according to this polymorphism (134 ± 32 vs 134 ± 31 mg/dL, for the TT + GT vs GG carriers, respectively, P = .931). Despite equal LDL-cholesterol levels, adults carrying the T allele had a lower mean common carotid IMT (0.685 ± 0.09 vs 0.723 ± 0.127 mm; P = .035), a lower maximum common carotid IMT (0.819 ± 0.11 vs 0.865 ± 0.159 mm; P = .040), and, in males, a lower prevalence of ED (36.8% vs 61%: P = .036), than GG carriers. Prevalence of the T allele was 3.2% in both cohorts of children. They had lower levels of LDL-cholesterol than GG subjects (100 vs 109 mg/dL; P = .060, for prepuberal children, and 85 vs 99 mg/dL; P = .010 for adolescents). CONCLUSION: In our population, an association between the PCSK9 R46L variant and LDL-cholesterol levels is observed in children. In adults, although its association with lipid levels is not evident, there is a significant relationship between the PCSK9 R46L variant and markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, including IMT and ED.

Objective: To evaluate whether there were any differences in the risk factor profile associated with either the intima-media thickness (IMT) or the presence of carotid plaques. Methods: Cross-sectional study in 1475 subjects between 45 and 75years, randomly selected from the population of the Northwest area of Madrid (Spain). They had a physical exam, blood analysis, and ultrasound measurement of the IMT and of the presence of plaques. Results: Mean IMT was 0.725±0.132mm. Forty seven percent of the participants had carotid plaques. In multivariate analysis, factors directly associated with the IMT were, age (β0.227, P<.0001), sex (β0.104, P<.0001), presence of hypertension (β0.082, P=.002), diabetes (β0.130, P<.0001) and current smoking (β0.107, P<.0001), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (β0.219, P<.0001) and LDL-cholesterol levels (β0.074, P=.003), and inversely, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (β−0.124, P=.001), HDL-cholesterol (β−0.111, P<.0001) and triglyceride levels (β−0.060, P=.028). The presence of plaques was directly associated with age (OR1.08; 95%CI: 1.05-1.10), sex (OR1.95; 95%CI: 1.52-2.51), current smoking (OR2.75; 95%CI: 1.92-3.95), history of hypertension (OR1.58; 95%CI: 1.22-2.04) or diabetes (OR1.84; 95%CI: 1.31-2.58), statin treatment (OR1.56; 95%CI: 1.19-2.04) and SBP (OR1.03; 95%CI: 1.02-1.05), and inversely with DBP (OR0.98; 95%CI: 0.96-0.99). Conclusion: Factors associated with the IMT and the presence of plaques are similar, a finding that support a continuum between muscular layer hypertrophy and arteriosclerosis development (AU)

RESUMO

Background: Adherence to a Mediterranean diet seems to be inversely associated with C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration. A 14-point Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) has been developed to assess dietary compliance. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess whether each of the MEDAS questions as well as their final score were associated with the levels of CRP in general Spanish population. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 1411 subjects (mean age 61 years, 43.0% males) randomly selected from the general population. CRP levels were determined by a commercial ELISA kit. Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was measured by the 14-point MEDAS. Results: There was an inverse correlation between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and the CRP concentration, even after adjusting by age, gender, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, body mass index, statin treatment and hypertension treatment (p = 0.041). Subjects who consume ≥2 servings of vegetables per day (p = 0.003), ≥3 pieces of fruit per day (p = 0.003), ≥1 serving of butter, margarine, or cream per day (p = 0.041) or ≥3 servings of fish/seafood per week (p = 0.058) had significantly lower levels of CRP. Conclusions: Adherence to a Mediterranean-type diet measured by a simple questionnaire is associated with lower CRP concentration. However, this association seems to be particularly related to a higher consumption of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and fish.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether there were any differences in the risk factor profile associated with either the intima-media thickness (IMT) or the presence of carotid plaques. METHODS: Cross-sectional study in 1475 subjects between 45 and 75years, randomly selected from the population of the Northwest area of Madrid (Spain). They had a physical exam, blood analysis, and ultrasound measurement of the IMT and of the presence of plaques. RESULTS: Mean IMT was 0.725±0.132mm. Forty seven percent of the participants had carotid plaques. In multivariate analysis, factors directly associated with the IMT were, age (ß0.227, P<.0001), sex (ß0.104, P<.0001), presence of hypertension (ß0.082, P=.002), diabetes (ß0.130, P<.0001) and current smoking (ß0.107, P<.0001), systolic blood pressure (SBP) (ß0.219, P<.0001) and LDL-cholesterol levels (ß0.074, P=.003), and inversely, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (ß-0.124, P=.001), HDL-cholesterol (ß-0.111, P<.0001) and triglyceride levels (ß-0.060, P=.028). CONCLUSION: Factors associated with the IMT and the presence of plaques are similar, a finding that support a continuum between muscular layer hypertrophy and arteriosclerosis development.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe corneal grafting for the treatment of full-thickness corneal defects in dogs and to determine its effectiveness in preserving vision. METHODS: A review of the medical records of dogs that underwent corneal grafting following corneal perforations (≥3 mm) at the VTH-UAB from 2002 to 2012 was carried out. RESULTS: Fifty dogs of different breed, age and gender were included. Brachycephalic breeds were overrepresented (37/50;74%). All cases were unilateral, with euryblepharon being the most common concurrent ocular abnormality (20/50;40%). Full-thickness penetrating keratoplasties (FTPK) were performed in 21/50 eyes (42%) and lamellar keratoplasties (LK) in 29/50 eyes (58%). Frozen grafts (FroG) were used in 43/50 eyes (86%) and fresh homologous grafts (FreHoG) in 7/50 (14%). Of the former group, 26 were homologous (FroHoG:60%) and 17 heterologous (FroHeG:40%). A combination of topical medication (antibiotics, corticosteroids, cycloplegics, and 0.2% cyclosporine A) and systemic mycophenolate mofetil was administered. Median follow-up time was 200 days. Postsurgical complications included wound dehiscence (6/50;12%) and glaucoma (4/50;8%). Clinical signs of graft rejection were diagnosed as follows: FroHoG (13/26;50%), FroHeG (11/17;65%), FreHoG (4/7;57%), FTPK (12/21;57%), and LK (16/29;55%). Medical treatment successfully controlled graft rejection in 11/28 eyes (39%). Good anatomical outcome was achieved in 86% (43/50), of which 95% (41/43) were visual at last examination, with moderate opacification to complete transparency of the graft present in 48.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Corneal grafting is an effective surgical treatment for full-thickness corneal defects in dogs. If graft rejection is present, additional medical or surgical therapy may be necessary, achieving a highly satisfactory visual outcome.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The presence of erectile dysfunction (ED) could be a warning of vascular disease in different arterial territories. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between ED and the presence of atherosclerosis in 2 different vascular beds: carotid and lower limbs. METHODS: A total of 614 volunteers between 45 and 74 years of age (mean age 61.0 years) were randomly selected from the general population. ED was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). Ankle-brachial index (ABI) measurement and carotid atherosclerosis were evaluated by echo-Doppler. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mean carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), prevalence of carotid plaques, mean ABI, and prevalence of ABI < 0.9 were the main outcome measures. RESULTS: ED was present in 373 subjects (59.7%). Mean carotid IMT was significantly higher in men with ED (0.762 ± 0.151 mm vs 0.718 ± 0.114 mm, P < .001). Also the global prevalence of carotid plaques was more frequent in men with ED (63.8% vs 44.8%, P < .001), even after adjusting by age, cardiovascular risk factors, and ongoing treatment (P = .039). Both the IMT and the prevalence of carotid plaques increased significantly with ED severity (P trend .004 and <.001, respectively). There were no significant differences between groups neither in mean ABI nor in the prevalence of subjects with ABI < 0.9. However, there was a trend to a lower ABI and a higher prevalence of ABI < 0.9 with increasing ED severity. CONCLUSION: In the general population, the presence of ED identifies subjects with higher atherosclerosis burden in carotid arteries but not in the lower extremities.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of topical 1% cyclopentolate hydrochloride (CH) on tear production (TP), pupil size (PS), and intraocular pressure (IOP) in dogs. ANIMAL STUDIED: Fifteen healthy beagle dogs from the UAB research-teaching colony. PROCEDURE: Dogs without ocular diseases were included. Each animal received one drop of 1% CH ophthalmic solution in a randomly selected eye. TP, PS, and IOP were evaluated by means of STT-1, static pupillometry, and rebound tonometry, respectively. Evaluations were performed before drug instillation and at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 30, 36, 48, 54, 60, 72, 84, and 96 h postinstillation. Examinations took place in a room with fixed light intensity (40-55 lux). Statistical analysis was performed by means of generalized estimating equations for the effect on STT-1, pupil size, and IOP over time. RESULTS: After unilateral application of 1% CH, significant pupillary dilation started at 30 min, reached its maximum at 12 h, and returned to pre-instillation size after 72 h. No significant effects were found on TP or IOP, at any time. No effects were observed in the untreated eye on any of the parameters evaluated. CONCLUSION: Cyclopentolate hydrochloride could be considered a therapeutic alternative when use of a cycloplegic drug is needed and effects on tear production and IOP are unwanted.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Intima-media thickness (IMT) is increased in subjects with prediabetes or newly diagnosed diabetes. However, no previous studies have evaluated the relationship between the severity of carotid atherosclerosis, assessed by the presence of carotid plaques or stenosis, and the glycemic status, assessed either by fasting glucose, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) or A1C levels. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 1475 subjects (mean age 62 years, 44% males), randomly selected from the population. A fasting blood sample was obtained to determine glucose, lipids, and A1C levels. An OGTT was performed in non-diabetic subjects. Carotid atherosclerosis was evaluated by echo-doppler. RESULTS: A 10.5% of the population had a previous diagnosis of diabetes. Of the 1320 non-diabetic participants, 349 (26.4%) had normal fasting glucose, normal glucose tolerance and A1C < 5.7%, and were considered controls. Prediabetes was diagnosed in 850 subjects (64.4%), and diabetes was newly diagnosed in 121 (9.2%). The prevalence of patients with carotid plaques was 34.2% in controls, 45.1% in prediabetics, 64.2% in newly diagnosed diabetics, and 72.9% in established diabetic patients. These numbers were 0.3%, 1.1%, 5.0% and 7.7% for carotid stenosis, respectively. In multivariate analysis, glycemic status remained significantly associated with the prevalence of carotid plaques after adjusting for age, sex, statin treatment, and cardiovascular risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Glycemic status is associated with all grades of carotid atherosclerosis, from early signs, as demonstrated by the IMT, to intermediate degrees, as demonstrated by the presence of carotid plaques, to advance atherosclerosis, as established by the presence of carotid stenosis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical outcome of corneal grafting for the treatment of feline corneal sequestrum (FCS). ANIMAL STUDIED: Domestic cats. PROCEDURES: A review of the medical records of cats that underwent keratoplasty as a treatment of FCS at the VTH-UAB, from 2002 to 2012, was carried out. RESULTS: Thirteen cats (18 eyes) of different breed, age, and gender were included. Persian cats were overrepresented (12/13;92%). There were nine males and four females, of a mean age of 3.4 years (0.7-7.1). Ipsilateral chronic corneal ulceration was reported as the most common concurrent ocular disease (6/18;33%). Keratoplasty was performed bilaterally in 5 cats (5/13;38%) and unilaterally in 8 (8/13;62%). Lamellar keratoplasty was performed in 17 eyes (17/18;95%) and full-thickness keratoplasty in 1 (1/18;5%). Mean graft size was 8.3 mm (4-11.5). Fresh homologous graft was performed in 2 eyes (2/18;11%) and frozen graft in 16 (16/18;89%). Of the latter group, homologous graft was performed in 6 eyes (6/16;37.5%) and heterologous in 10 (10/16;62.5%). In all the cats, postoperative treatment included topical antibiotics, corticosteroids, cycloplegics, and 0.2% cyclosporine A. Median follow-up time was 18.2 months, and main postoperative complications were diffuse mild epithelial pigment formation (2/18;11%), graft malacia (1/18;5%), and sequestrum recurrence (1/18;5%). Mean epithelial healing time was 19.2 days. Good visual outcome was achieved in all the eyes (100%), the majority of them having faint or mild corneal opacity (15/18;83%). CONCLUSIONS: Keratoplasty is an effective surgical treatment for FCS. The donor tissue provides excellent tectonic support to the affected corneas, with good visual and cosmetic outcome.

Objective: To examine the perceptions of female immigrant domestic workers of the effect of Royal Decree 1620/2011, which regulates the relationship of domestic workers in the family home and their employment conditions in Spain. Methods An exploratory study was performed using qualitative content analysis of three focus group discussions with immigrant women from Colombia, Ecuador and Morocco. Results Immigrant women positively assessed the theoretical benefits of the new regulation, but identified legal and economic barriers to obtaining a contract and being registered in the social security system by their employers, and to employers accepting the cost of these measures, especially for workers hired by the hour. These difficulties affected their possibilities of legalizing their status. The economic crisis posed a serious challenge to compliance with the new regulation. Conclusions Although the new regime encourages job creation with stronger working rights for these workers, immigrant women perceived that its implementation has been hampered by the current financial crisis and has not, therefore, improved their employment conditions (AU)

Background and objective: to show clinical features of subjects with hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) referred to the Lipid Units associated to Spanish Arteriosclerosis Society (ULSEA).Patients and method: it is a prospective, cross-sectional, multicentric study of patients with serum Tgs > 200mg/dL, recruited from January 2007 to December 2008. Demographic, drug therapies, anthropometrical, main diagnosis and biochemical parameters were registered. Results: We included 1,033 men and 361 women, 50±12 years-old. Vascular disease, smoking, alcohol intake and liver steatosis were more prevalent in men than in women; by contrast, hypertension, diabetes and abdominal obesity were they in women. Regular physical exercise and a healthy diet were kept sparsely. Most patients suffered from a primary HTG (54%), mainly familial combined hyperlipidemia or familial hypertriglyceridemia. Obesity, alcohol intake and diabetes were the most common secondary forms of HTG. Among patients, 27% were diet-only treated, 44% received drugs in monotherapy and 24% drugs in combinations. Conclusions: Although primary forms of HTG are common, we show here a high prevalence of secondary forms and conditions worsening the HTG, being smoking and alcohol intake in men and abdominal obesity and diabetes in women. Even though most patients are drug-treated, diet and regular exercise recommendations should be clearly improved (AU)
